After some review of past decisions, we have decided to re-visit the MicroSD card slot for data storage. Although a soldered on flash chip has some advantages over a MicroSD card, namely less moving parts, a smaller footprint, and lower cost, the MicroSD card wins overall, especially from the point of view of trying to get a working prototype as soon as possible.

MicroSD Flash
Physical Size 14.5mm \times 14.5mm 10.3mm \times 10.3mm
Memory Size Up to 32GB ~32MB
Dev Work Minimal / Built into MCU Full hardware driver development
Cost $1.63 Slot + $7.00 Card = $8.63 $2.87

Potentially, we could offer a version without the MicroSD card, so customers would save money if they already have one. There must be an option with a pre-formatted SD card included.

To solidify this decision, we will re-add the SD card schematic, and attempt a board layout. If we cannot create a board layout that meets all design requirements (#1), then we will not go forward with the decision to use a MicroSD card.
